Practical Nursing Course Activities/Assignments

<< Back to Practical Nursing

Outcome 1:  Effectively communicate by sharing accurate information through various technologies thus promoting multidisciplinary team and client collaboration to provide effective nursing care.

Project A:  Final exam questions on Therapeutic Communication.

Who:  PN faculty Sharon Arnold (Vincennes Campus), Julie Eckert and Ann Boeglin (Jasper Campus) and Alice Hidlenbrand, Program Chair of Jasper Campus, and Freda Neal, University Assessment Liaison, met to discuss program improvement plan.
Why:  Based on observation, PN faculty noted that PN students need to improve upon application of basic components of therapeutic patient communication.  Students are not fully applying communication concepts presented in lecture class to the clinical setting.  Originally, faculty wanted to develop a role play activity however due to lack of time the activity did not get done.  The final exam questions on the Vincennes Campus NURP final exam were substituted.  Jasper campus course had been completed before change in plan was made therefore there was no opportunity to collect the data.

Project B:  ATI Mental Health Proctored Assessment Subscale Therapeutic Communication given Summer semester, 2011.

Who:  PN faculty Sharon Arnold (Vincennes Campus), Julie Eckert and Ann Boeglin (Jasper Campus) and Alice Hildenbrand, Program Chair of Jasper Campus, and Freda Neal, University Assessment Liaison, met to discuss program improvement plan.
Why:  Faculty wanted to see how students at the end of the program scored on a national standardized test in the area of therapeutic communication.

Outcome 2:  Provide health education for clients under the direction of a registered nurse to promote adaptation to health changes and achieve optimal levels of wellness.

Project A:  Questions on health education related questions on final exam of course NURP 100.

Who:  PN faculty Sharon Arnold (Vincennes Campus), Julie Eckert and Ann Boeglin (Jasper Campus) and Alice Hildenbrand, Program Chair of Jasper Campus, and Freda Neal, University Assessment Liaison, met to discuss program improvement plan.
Why:  Spring 2011 faculty discussed that while health education is a program outcome, it has not been formally evaluated to the extent that some of the other program outcomes have been in the past.  Efforts to evaluate this program began at that time and it continues to be a focus Fall 2011 and will be again Spring 2012.

Project B:  Health education poster.
