Mission Statement
The mission of the Vincennes University Reading program is to assist underprepared students who have been admitted to Vincennes University to achieve college level reading skills so that they can be successful in their chosen field of study.  The goal of the Reading program is to provide quality learning opportunities to facilitate students’ ability to think critically, comprehend effectively, utilize and evaluate written sources, and enhance reading vocabulary.  This will be accomplished through the practice of critical reading skills such as determining the main idea, making inferences based on facts given, and summary writing. 

Program Learning Outcomes
Students who complete course work in the Reading program will be able to:

  • illustrate an ability to use basic reading comprehension skills necessary for entry into college level courses.
  • demonstrate the ability to expand their reading vocabularies using both word attack skills and memorization.
  • use critical reading skills to assess content, make judgments and reach conclusions.
  • select reading goals.
  • use information resources, such as the dictionary, software, and the internet.
