English as a Second Language (ESL)

Mission Statement
The mission of the Vincennes University English as a Second Language (ESL) program is to provide English Language Learners with high quality instruction in English language acquisition and to broaden their cultural awareness for success in their academic, professional, and personal lives by offering cultural and academic opportunities to discuss and share ideas in a safe and supportive environment. ESL prepares students for successful academic study at Vincennes University. In addition, ESL offers non-native community members the opportunity to learn and improve their English language skills.

Program Learning Outcomes
Students who complete course work in the ESL program will be able to:

  • demonstrate comprehension of standard spoken English.
  • converse with clarity using pronunciation/stress/intonation patterns.
  • demonstrate effective word choice, vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure in short writings.
  • develop and ask questions appropriate to a given listening context.
  • evaluate the evidence presented and state an opinion about what they have read.
  • demonstrate listening comprehension appropriate to ESL level 1-5. 
  • demonstrate reading comprehension appropriate to ESL level 1-5.
