Critical Thinking and Higher Order Thinking by Gary Brown

Focus on Critical Thinking & Higher Order Thinking

A Focused Approach

For Improvement, Outcomes Assessment, Articulation & Accreditation

In May, 2014, Gary Brown presented an integrated teaching and assessment approach to promoting higher order learning.  The approach has received recognition from AAC&U, NSF, and EDUCAUSE ELI.  It has been noted by several accrediting agencies as a model for other departments to follow.”  The approach was first developed by Dr. Brown and colleagues at Washington State University as part of a FIPSE grant and has since converged across the country, most visibly as the central strategy used in AAC&U’s VALUE project.  At the heart of the process is a focus on students’ critical thinking as defined by faculty in their own disciplines leveraging their own assignments—the work faculty do every day in their teaching practice.
